Fun & Festive DIY Event Decor for Summer

Now that summer is in full swing you’ll be planning all kinds of outdoor events from weddings to children’s birthday parties and family reunions! You’ll need some fresh ideas for outdoor event décor to impress your clients but don’t worry; we’re here to help. We’ve scoured the internet for fun DIY event decor with easy-to-follow instructions that won’t leave you scratching your head in confusion!

Hanging Hot Air Balloons

This outdoor décor is playful so it would be best suited to a party with a whimsical theme or a children’s birthday. These pieces can be multi-purpose since you can hang placards from them to identify tables or photos to add a personal touch to the décor. The hot air balloons are not too difficult to create, depending on how you paint the balloon. Of course, the more intricate the patterns you choose to paint the more time-consuming this décor would be to build.

Materials:

  • Large bouncy balls for the balloon portion (can be found at most dollar stores)
  • Potted herbs
  • Square tin pots or cans (can substitute for anything that would work as a basket)
  • Acrylic paint and paintbrush
  • Twine

Ruffled Blog provides photos and instructions for creating these whimsical hanging hot air balloons.

Materials for DIY event decor

Pineapple Mini-Piñatas

These little piñatas are adorable and would be great for any outdoor luau theme party or barbeque. They add a fun flavor to the outdoor décor and any children in attendance would be excited to bash them to pieces! If it’s an adult-only party, no problem! You can fill them with childhood candy favorites from a specialty candy store (think Red Hots, Nerds, Big League Chew, Fun Dip, pop rocks, fizz candy, ring pops—the options are endless!) These do require some effort for assembly but you would only need to make a couple!

Materials:

  • A “pineapple-shaped” paper lantern
  • Yellow & green crepe paper
  • Thin wire
  • Yellow cardstock
  • Twine, ribbon or string
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue and hot glue gun
  • Double-stick tape (optional)
  • Candy or goodies as filling!

Fancy Balloons

It’s amazing what a little bit of ingenuity can do! Take regular old balloons and turn them into elegant, interesting conversation pieces with these DIY tutorials. Since the balloons can be customized to fit event themes and color schemes they are quite versatile for décor. You can use them for all kinds of outdoor summer events from children’s parties to baby showers and even outdoor weddings!

Confetti Balloons

Confetti for DIY event decor

Materials:

  • Clear balloons (so you can see the confetti through them!)
  • Tissue paper confetti

These are incredibly easy to prepare, you’ll just need to take them to be filled with helium or rent a helium tank. You can follow the step-by-step tutorial from Kojo Designs!

Confetti-Dipped Balloons

Materials:

  • Balloons (already filled with helium)
  • Foil confetti (gold, silver, whatever matches your color scheme!)
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush or foam brush

You may need to sacrifice a balloon as a tester since if you use too much glue and confetti the balloon may weigh too much to float! Head on over to Studio DIY for a photo tutorial!

Glowing Balloons

Materials:

  • White Balloons (the glowsticks will add the color!)
  • Glow sticks or glow-in-the-dark bracelets (most dollar stores would carry these)

If you want to incorporate a personal touch to an outdoor event then do so by hanging photos on a clothesline! This décor works great for family reunions, weddings and milestone parties. You can customize in so many ways from the clothespins you use to the photos you choose to hang. You can buy clothespins that fit your color scheme or paint them yourself. For a more vintage look you can use wooden clothes pins, rustic twine and black & white or sepia photos.

Materials:

  • Outdoor clothesline (or string/twine tied from one tree to another)
  • Photos
  • Clothespins
