In fact, many businesses fall flat on their faces\u2014all a consequence of lack of preparation!<\/p>\n<p>If you want to start an event planning business, you\u2019ll need a few core building blocks. First, you\u2019ll need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/online-event-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professional event planning training<\/a> or industry experience. Second, you\u2019ll need a bit of collateral to get your company off the ground (luckily an event planning business can launch for a very low cost). Third, you\u2019ll need the drive and dedication to find clients and get yourself hired!<\/p>\n<p>Now, these are all presented in general terms. Also, I doubt you\u2019d be able to find a single event planning client who would put any confidence in your abilities without evidence of any competency in the industry!<\/p>\n<p>If you have zero experience in the event planning industry, start with getting event planner training. There\u2019s no question that being a certified event planner will make your life a lot easier as you start your own business.<\/p>\n<p>The great news is good event planning courses will also provide you with business training, where you\u2019ll learn how to launch and manage your own event planning business. Since that\u2019s your ultimate goal, training as an event planner can effectively become a two-birds-one-stone situation!<\/p>\n<p>If you already have experience in the event planning industry and a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.qceventplanning.com\/2017\/08\/7-musts-include-event-planning-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strong portfolio<\/a> under your belt, then odds are you don\u2019t need additional industry education or certifications to start your own event planning business. If you\u2019re a business newbie, however, you might benefit from taking a course that\u2019s going to specifically focus on starting your own business. If you\u2019re going to be working for yourself, you must handle the administrative work, too.<\/p>\n<p>In order to get your event business off the ground, you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.qceventplanning.com\/2015\/06\/choosing-a-name-for-your-event-planning-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A name for your event planning business<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A portfolio of your best work (this can be school work if you\u2019re new to the industry)<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.qceventplanning.com\/2019\/01\/5-ways-to-ramp-up-your-event-planning-business-online-presence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">good website<\/a> for your business (you can\u2019t get away from this these days!)<\/li>\n<li>Office space (this can often be a home office) and supplies<\/li>\n<li>A business license (if required in your area)<\/li>\n<li>Business insurance (there is specific insurance for event planning businesses!)<\/li>\n<li>A pricing structure for your services (often the toughest part of starting your business!)<\/li>\n<li>Contract templates for vendors and clients that have been reviewed by a lawyer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these elements (and many more) should be covered in a detailed business startup plan. If you\u2019re lucky enough to be taking a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/online-event-courses\/event-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event planning course<\/a>, that course should include training where you\u2019ll develop this type of a business plan.<\/p>\n<h3 align=\"CENTER\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/start-an-event-planning-business-checklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DOWNLOAD A BUSINESS LAUNCH CHECKLIST<\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Reality Check:<\/b> A fair amount of people start their own business because they\u2019re passionate about the industry, only to learn that running a business means you\u2019ll be responsible for the business, not just for doing the job you love to do. It takes a specific personality type to be a successful business owner\u2026 and to enjoy running their own business! You\u2019re probably a good fit for running your own business if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are a self-starter. As a business owner, you won\u2019t have anyone above you who will push you to do work or do a good job. So you have to be able to push yourself!<\/li>\n<li>Are good at managing stress. Being your own boss can be stressful, especially when things don\u2019t go exactly according to plan. If you have a tendency to break down or shut down when stressed, business ownership is probably not a good fit for you.<\/li>\n<li>Have realistic expectations. Unless you\u2019re starting your event planning business with years of experience under your belt AND a strong client base out of the gate, you can\u2019t expect to get dozens of clients and make hundreds of thousands of dollars in your first year. Having realistic expectations and understanding your limitations will make you a happier business owner.<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t give up easily. When things don\u2019t go as planned, you take a step back and try something else. You\u2019re not easily deterred or distracted from important goals.<\/li>\n<li>Are good with money. You don\u2019t have to be rich to start your own business. But you do have to be financially responsible. If you\u2019re unable to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.qceventplanning.com\/2018\/02\/know-handle-7-event-budget-busters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stick to a budget<\/a> in your personal life, consider long and hard whether you\u2019ll be able to do so with your business.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t mind taking risks. In order to launch, maintain and grow a successful business, you\u2019ll need to be comfortable with taking calculated risks with your business. There\u2019s always a chance that a decision will prove to be the wrong one, and you need to be OK with that possibility.<\/li>\n<li>Know when to ask for help. You know you\u2019re not an expert in every area and you don\u2019t have to be! You\u2019re perfectly happy to ask for help when you need to. It doesn\u2019t make you any less of a business owner.<\/li>\n<li>Want to run a business! Okay, so this might be a no-brainer. But a lot of people start an event planning business because they think it\u2019s the only way to work in the industry. But there are many other industries that could use someone with your education.
