We\u2019re sure you\u2019ll get all those things simply by throwing up an ad for your business in the local newspaper and then never following up on it again.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, what even is \u201cbranding\u201d anyway? Is it really that important to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2019\/12\/3-solid-event-portfolio-examples-to-look-up-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an online, refined, up-to-date portfolio<\/a> that best represents you for potential clients? Nope! Word of mouth is all you <em>really <\/em>need to bring in traffic \u2013 and you\u2019ve already told, like, <em>nine <\/em>people about your business!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Dont_bother_listening_to_your_client\"><\/span>Step #2: Don\u2019t bother listening to your client<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019re the professional, so you know what\u2019s best. It\u2019ll make you look better during the initial consultation if you at least <em>pretend <\/em>to care about your client\u2019s opinion, otherwise you likely won\u2019t get her to sign the contract. You won\u2019t get paid otherwise! But rest assured, once she\u2019s signed and locked in, feel free to disregard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/the-7-questions-event-planners-should-ask-every-client\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her input<\/a>. She\u2019ll be much more surprised when her big event finally arrives and she sees all of the AWESOME executive decisions you\u2019ve made on her behalf. I mean, <em>she <\/em>hired <em>you<\/em>, didn\u2019t she? If she wasn\u2019t prepared to trust in your judgment, she should\u2019ve just organized this whole thing herself.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_3_Blame_literally_everyone_but_yourself\"><\/span>Step #3: Blame literally everyone but yourself<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You didn\u2019t provide the right information to the caterer, and now the guests\u2019 meals are incorrect? The vendor must not have understood you correctly!<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re late to a meeting with your client because you wanted to finish that last episode of <em>The Witcher <\/em>instead of heading out on time? Well, traffic was just <em>awful<\/em> &#8211; it\u2019s a miracle you even got there at all!<\/p>\n<p>The client\u2019s upset that you went over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2018\/06\/stretch-budgets-and-shrink-guest-lists-with-a-certificate-in-event-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her budget<\/a>? She should\u2019ve made it clear that her budget wasn\u2019t flexible!<\/p>\n<p>You forgot to email your client with some important details, and now she\u2019s angry with you? Swear until you\u2019re blue in the face that you <em>did <\/em>send it. It must\u2019ve just gotten lost. Email sucks.<\/p>\n<p>See? If you try hard enough, anything can be someone else\u2019s fault! The important thing is that you never hold yourself accountable for the mistakes you make, because then you might look bad in front of your clients. Using your shortcomings to help you grow as a person is seriously overrated anyways. Coordinating details, keeping tracks of things, planning ahead, and staying on top of your schedule are the only ways to ensure that you do your job properly. But that\u2019s simply not true! It\u2019s perfectly possible to throw together an event at the last minute. You just need to have the determination, which you have in spades!<\/p>\n<p>All the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/how-to-find-the-perfect-vendors-for-your-event-career-in-event-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">best vendors<\/a> may already be booked, and the venue your client was hoping for won\u2019t be an option anymore. But there are still plenty of places and services that\u2019ll eagerly take your client\u2019s money on short notice! For example, businesses with low ratings and bad reviews aren\u2019t typically too busy, so you know you always have those to fall back on.<\/p>\n<p>In general, it\u2019s way easier to push off to tomorrow what you <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">should<\/span> can do today! Sure, there may be times \u2013 especially the closer you get to the big day \u2013 where you become completely overwhelmed by all the unfinished tasks that have mounted up, but you\u2019ll deal with that when the time comes. That\u2019s future you\u2019s problem, and right now, you have other things you\u2019d rather be doing!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_5_Refuse_to_continue_learning_your_craft\"><\/span>Step #5: Refuse to continue learning your craft<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Once you become a professional planner and start your own business, there\u2019s no longer any need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/7-things-youll-learn-wedding-planning-school\/\">continue learning<\/a> more about event and wedding planning. Why should you take classes and pay for education at this point? Schooling is what you do <em>before <\/em>you break out into the professional world; if anything, it\u2019s just a stepping stone to help you get there.<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019re already there! You clearly wouldn\u2019t benefit from it. It\u2019s just not possible. Not only does it demonstrate horrible customer service, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/8-reasons-not-get-event-planner-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a terrible work ethic<\/a>. The fact is, in order to be a prosperous planner, you absolutely need to have the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organization skills<\/li>\n<li>Self-discipline and motivation<\/li>\n<li>Self-awareness, and the ability to own up to and learn from your mistakes<\/li>\n<li>The ability to not only listen to your client, but do everything you can to try and make <em>their <\/em>vision come true \u2013 not yours<\/li>\n<li>Resources, and the ability to network<\/li>\n<li>A strong online presence and business portfolio<\/li>\n<li>The desire to keep learning and getting better at what you do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So if you\u2019ve read Steps 1-5 and related to any of those bad habits, you may need to take a step back and reevaluate what you\u2019re doing, and where you\u2019re trying to go in your career.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a long time to establish yourself and your business, and solidify a positive reputation. Maintaining it after that is a full-time commitment, and one that will last as long as you want to stay in business. Give up and stop putting in the effort, and you\u2019ll see just how quickly all of that hard work can be undone.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to tank your career in event and wedding planning. What\u2019s hard is fighting every day for your business to be the best it can be.
