Just in a moment when you\u2019re about to have a panic attack, someone comes along and very helpfully suggests that you should just calm down.  \u201cThanks, friend. Never thought of that!\u201d  It\u2019s the equivalent of the dentist telling you to relax before she pulls a tooth. Doesn\u2019t help.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I\u2019m on board and totally agree that people need to calm down in general. There seems to be a strange cultural phenomenon that says if you\u2019re not stressed by your job, you\u2019re not working hard enough.  I really don\u2019t understand where this one came from, but all you have to do is observe people in a business environment to know it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>If you take a step back and investigate further, you\u2019ll notice that the most successful and happiest entrepreneurs and professionals are some of the most easy-going people in the world.  These are the people who understand how to keep their stress levels at bay.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can do it, too!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stress-Free-Zone.jpg\" alt=\"Stress Free Zone\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stress-Free-Zone.jpg 738w, https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stress-Free-Zone-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"highlight\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1%E2%80%94Keep_your_work_at_work\"><\/span>#1\u2014Keep your work at work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Smart phones are a double-edged sword.  On the one hand, who doesn\u2019t love having an internet machine in their back pocket at all times? On the flip side, it means that your emails are always with you, and that flashing notification light makes you feel lazy if you ignore it for too long.<\/p>\n<p>But the number one most useful piece of advice I can give you when it comes to stress management is to actually disconnect when you head home at the end of the day.  Focus on your family, your pets, your hobbies.  Your work will be waiting for you the next day, don\u2019t worry.<\/p>\n<p>Turn off the email notifications on your phone.  You really don\u2019t need a \u201cbeep\u201d and flashing light every time you get a newsletter delivered to your business inbox. If it makes you feel better, check your email once (yes, only once) in the evening in case of emergencies (which is very unlikely to actually happen, by the way). Before long, you\u2019ll stop even doing that and you\u2019ll actually find yourself looking for something to do on your evenings and weekends.  You know, something OTHER than \u201ccatching up on work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So disconnect when you get home and only use your smartphone for what it was intended: ordering pizza and playing Candy Crush.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"highlight\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2%E2%80%94Plan_to_work_work_your_plan\"><\/span>#2\u2014Plan to work, work your plan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Have you ever sat at your computer desk for the better part of a day only to leave thinking you\u2019ve accomplished absolutely nothing? That\u2019s probably because emails, meetings, colleagues, phone calls, more emails, and social media got in the way. It happens to everyone, and is an especially prominent issue with small business owners.<\/p>\n<p>Do yourself a favor: start making it a point to block out a 1-2 hour period of time each day for \u201cwork\u201d.  Put it in your personal calendar and make sure your colleagues\/employees know you\u2019re busy during this time. Again, turn off your email notifications (including the desktop ones!) and don\u2019t answer calls unless you know they\u2019re crazy-important. Now take out your long-overdue \u201cto do\u201d list and start knocking off the important stuff. You know, the stuff you know NEEDS to get done but that you never have the time for. Here\u2019s your chance. You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Trust me.  This is a very difficult habit to adopt but once you have, it\u2019s amazing just how much you\u2019ll get done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"482\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Set-Aside-Time.jpg\" alt=\"Set Aside Time\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Set-Aside-Time.jpg 738w, https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Set-Aside-Time-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"highlight\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3%E2%80%94Eat_Drink_and_be_Merry\"><\/span>#3\u2014Eat, Drink and be Merry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In other words, look out for #1 (that\u2019s you, by the way).<\/p>\n<p>A healthy body breeds a healthy mind. Give yourself permission to take a good half hour for an honest-to-God breakfast in the morning and a good wholesome lunch during the workday. Drink lots of water, and try to get a good uninterrupted night\u2019s sleep. A good workout once or twice a week can also do wonders for your overall stress levels.<\/p>\n<p>And on the flip side, make some time for yourself to truly and completely unwind at least once a week.  For me, that\u2019s a hot bubble bath with a glass of wine and a book, or a nice long walk at the dog park.  For others, it might be a wilderness hike or dinner with friends.  Whatever works for you!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s pause.  I know what you\u2019re thinking.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"highlight\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CThats_all_fine_and_dandy_but_Im_TOO_BUSY_to_do_any_of_that_Thats_why_Im_stressed_Dont_you_get_it%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cThat\u2019s all fine and dandy, but I\u2019m TOO BUSY to do any of that! That\u2019s why I\u2019m stressed! Don\u2019t you get it?\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Trust me.  I do get it.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact of the matter is, most of us are actually caught in the belief that our work life defines us. And it really shouldn\u2019t!<\/p>\n<div class=\"column-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"half-1\">\n<p>Think about it: if you were to take a half hour every week for a bubble bath, would your business go bankrupt? Would you lose clients? Would your colleagues end up hating or resenting you?  For 99.99% of you, the answer is \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m hoping most people realize this truism BEFORE they burn out and have to take a few months\u2019 stress leave.  Once you admit to yourself that you can afford to take care of yourself, believe me you\u2019ll become a calmer, happier person.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half-2\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"369\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Relaxing-Bath1.jpg\" alt=\"Relaxing Bath\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Relaxing-Bath1.jpg 369w, https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Relaxing-Bath1-300x263.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And isn\u2019t that everyone\u2019s ultimate goal?<\/p>\n<p>So try it.  Just for a week or two at first.  Think of it as a mini-challenge: turn off your notifications, don\u2019t answer emails after working hours, set aside some time to work every day and adopt a healthier lifestyle. If you won\u2019t do it for yourself, do it for me! Just because.
