Go ahead and try it.  I\u2019ll wait.<\/p>\n<p>How about changing your default language settings on Facebook? You\u2019ll find a few options in there that are worth trying out.  I recently changed my account to \u201cEnglish\u2014Pirate\u201d as a language\u2026 and I swear I\u2019ve used Facebook a little more since then.<\/p>\n<p>These are classic examples of \u201cEaster Egg\u201d Marketing:  fun little surprises on your website, made to delight customers.<\/p>\n<p>The great part about an Easter Eggs is, you let your users discover it on their own. Alternative forms of marketing are therefore growing like crazy because more and more customers are developing a blindness to classic-type ads.  Even paid search ads on Google are being ignored by a majority of searchers!<\/p>\n<p>Instead, consumers want to choose brands based on trust, reliability, and yes\u2014fun!<\/p>\n<p>This is why we encourage you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/how-to-write-a-blog\/\" title=\"How to Write a Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">write a blog<\/a> and have a good presence on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/social-media-beginners\/\" title=\"Social Media for Beginners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Easter egg marketing works because to the consumer, it\u2019s a surprise they weren\u2019t expecting. It helps them identify with your brand on a more personal level than if they were to stumble upon your ad on Facebook or Google for instance.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it. If you were on a site and found a gem you weren\u2019t expecting\u2026 say, press the Tab and B keys on your keyboard and have a picture of a Tabby Cat appear on your screen (thank you, <a href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\/\" title=\"Asana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asana<\/a>!).<\/p>\n<p>If cats are your cup of tea, you\u2019d instantly share this discovery with friends, wouldn\u2019t you?  And most likely, those friends will then go see that Easter Egg for themselves.  At least, that was the case when I discovered the Pirate English on Facebook.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"highlight\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Makes_an_Easter_Egg_Successful\"><\/span>What Makes an Easter Egg Successful<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are a few elements you\u2019ll want to consider before going ahead and committing time to developing your Easter Egg.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Brand Message<\/h3>\n<p>The most important factor in deciding to hide an Easter Egg, is you want to make sure it\u2019s suitable for your brand. I hope you have a specific brand identity, right? If not, you\u2019ll want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/personal-branding-business\/\" title=\"Personal Branding and Your Business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if your event planning company sends the message of elegance and luxury, suddenly changing to pirate speech on \u201ctalk like a pirate day\u201d (which is September 19th, by the way), probably won\u2019t work for that brand. Whereas a fun \u201cpop the question generator\u201d hidden within an article about national proposal day (March 20th) might be perfect!<\/p>\n<p>If your Easter Egg conforms to your brand\u2019s identity, it should therefore appeal to your target audience! Once you have that down, you\u2019re half-way there!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Easy to Find<\/h3>\n<p>If an Easter Egg is never found\u2026 then it\u2019s not worth the effort!<\/p>\n<p>Yes an Easter Egg is hidden\u2026 but you WANT people to find them.  Consider the two examples I mentioned at the start of this article. It\u2019s very likely that some people will genuinely type in \u201cdo a barrel roll\u201d into the Google search engine\u2026 or want to change their language settings on Facebook. Those Easter Eggs\u2014though \u201chidden\u201d as in no one\u2019s announced their existence\u2014are very easy to stumble upon!<\/p>\n<p>Consider that when you build your own Easter Egg.  Develop them in such a way that gives any random user a decent chance at discovering them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Easter-Eggs-Easy-to-Find.jpg\" alt=\"Easter Eggs Easy to Find\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Easter-Eggs-Easy-to-Find.jpg 738w, https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Easter-Eggs-Easy-to-Find-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Shareable<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s not enough that your users find your Easter Egg.  It needs to be fun, interesting and\/or surprising enough to warrant users sharing it with their friends.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it: the whole point of an Easter Egg is that you don\u2019t share it yourself.  So if you want it to work from a marketing standpoint, then you need your users to do the work for you! Odds are a good Easter Egg will be shared by 5-10% of users who discover it.  Make sure you have a method of measuring these results.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"highlight\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_else_should_you_know\"><\/span>What else should you know?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Alright, so I\u2019ve convinced you: Easter Eggs are a great way to increase brand awareness through user sharing. Now I\u2019ve got a few more tips if you\u2019re going to go down that road.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Plan Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>A good Easter Egg doesn\u2019t happen overnight for most businesses. Especially in your small business\u2026 you\u2019ll want to do careful planning and discuss with a web developer before you execute on your decision to build an Easter Egg.  If it\u2019s one that\u2019s time-sensitive (perhaps something that\u2019s only active for a special occasion or day) then you want to give yourself enough time to develop and test your Easter Egg properly. Which brings me to my next point:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Test It<\/h3>\n<p>User testing is always a good idea when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/building-your-website-design\/\" title=\"Building Your Website: What You Need to Know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building a website<\/a>, and this is also true when adding new features to your site.  Make sure your Easter Egg works properly in all browsers, and that there are no unexpected side effects to having it on your site.<\/p>\n<p>It might also be a good idea to have a few users go through your site and test it for you.  You can use some friends or family if you want, or use services like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usertesting.com\/\" title=\"UserTesting.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UserTesting.com<\/a> to have strangers go through your site.  This might also be a great way to see if those users can actually FIND your Easter Egg.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Test-Your-Easter-Eggs.jpg\" alt=\"Test Your Easter Eggs\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Test-Your-Easter-Eggs.jpg 738w, https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Test-Your-Easter-Eggs-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Engage with Users<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019re a small business, which means you have the advantage of being able to engage with people one-on-one.<\/p>\n<p>The point of Eater Egg Marketing is for users to spread the word for you, right? So help them along! You can set up alerts to monitor for mentions of your brand on social media like Facebook and Twitter, so that you are notified when someone is talking about you and your Easter Egg.  If you find a user who mentions finding your Easter Egg, you can write a reply to that person and maybe even start a discussion about their discovery.  This will in turn help other users discover that little delight for themselves!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"highlight\">Have Fun!<\/h3>\n<p>The whole purpose of Easter Egg Marketing is to make something fun for your customers.  But it should also be fun for you!  An Easter Egg should convey a message about who you are as a brand on a very real level.  So if Pirate Talk isn\u2019t something you find appealing, don\u2019t bother trying to work it into your content!
