They are looking for a planner who comes out for them with each and every vendor prior to the first meeting (or even phone\/email communication). Many same-sex couples fear being rejected by a wedding vendor or having to face the dreaded question \u201cWhere is the bride?\u201d when there isn\u2019t one. As the planner, you can ensure they don\u2019t get these uncomfortable questions.<\/p>\n<p>Same-sex couples are looking for planners who are willing to create new traditions with and for them\u2014planners who don&#8217;t always follow the old-school, \u201ctraditional\u201d planning rules. In general, same-sex weddings have a smaller guest count (is this always true? No. But it often is). Many times, there is no wedding party; there are not always supportive parents or family members involved. In many cases, same-sex couples never expected to get married. While straight people grow up knowing they have this right and, perhaps, imagine their wedding day from a young age, this is not the case for most same-sex couples. This is new and exciting territory for the LGBTQ community and it should be respected and admired.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I believe the most important thing is to get rid of all assumptions. Never, ever assume anything and always ask thoughtful and polite questions. For example, instead of saying \u201cwho will walk you down the aisle\u201d you might say \u201cHave you given any thought to how you want to walk down the aisle?\u201d or instead of \u201cWill you be dancing with your dad\/mom?\u201d you could say \u201cDo you want any special dances?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_avoid_common_mistakes\"><\/span>How to avoid common mistakes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"448\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9825\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.qceventplanning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/chicago-wedding-planner-04.jpg\" alt=\"LGBTQ Weddings Two Brides\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/chicago-wedding-planner-04.jpg 672w, https:\/\/www.qceventplanning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/chicago-wedding-planner-04-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><br \/>\n<i>Photography<\/i>: <a href=\"https:\/\/stevekoophotography.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Koo Photography<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Based on all of the information above, here is a recap of ways to avoid common mistakes that could prevent you from booking same-sex clients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stop making assumptions<\/li>\n<li>Remove \u201cbride\u201d as your go-to description of a client<\/li>\n<li>Show diversity on your website and all marketing materials<\/li>\n<li>Market on same-sex specific websites\/blogs<\/li>\n<li>Do not make off-color jokes<\/li>\n<li>Know your facts<\/li>\n<li>Have gender-neutral forms, timelines and checklists<\/li>\n<li>Ask open-ended questions and listen to your clients\u2019 needs<\/li>\n<li>Advocate for your clients and \u201ccome out\u201d for them prior to vendor interaction<\/li>\n<li>Get educated!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to being of service to your clients and building your same-sex wedding business, the things discussed here are designed to help educate you and advocate for the LGBTQ community. My work as a wedding planner is not simply to earn money. It is also to enrich the lives of my clients and vendors.
