Event Coordinator vs. Event Planner

When a client is looking to hire an event planning professional, they’ll likely do a ton of online research first. During this research, they may run into 2 different options:

  1. They can hire an event planner;
  2. Or they can hire an event coordinator.

But what’s the difference?

Generally speaking, an event planner is with you from Day One. They’ll help you make all of the critical decisions pertaining to your event. Moreover, an event planner will basically organize your event – in detail – from vision to reality. They’re also more focused on the design/concept of the event.

An event coordinator will generally come into play much closer to your event date (after most of the planning has already been done). The role of an event coordinator can be very similar to that of an event planner, in the sense that on the big day, the goal is to ensure that all of the details of the event are achieved flawlessly.

There are additional similarities between the two roles as well. Firstly, both an event planner and an event coordinator need to be extremely organized. Secondly, both jobs require you to think on your feet and deal with stressful situations. Additionally, event planners and event coordinators alike must be able to project manage different vendors and venues.

4 Signs YOU Should Get Event Coordinator Training

No matter the industry, professional training is extremely important! Although it’s not technically mandatory in the world of professional event planning, it’s still definitely recommended! Whether you want to be an event planner or an event coordinator, professional training will provide you with the information and skills needed to succeed in the industry. Furthermore, your clients will also appreciate it!

Here are 4 signs that you should enroll in event coordinator training today!

1. You have no prior experience coordinating events.

If you don’t have any previous experience in the event planning industry, you should definitely invest in professional event coordinator training. A proper education will provide you with a better understanding of how events function, as well as all of the work that goes into them behind-the-scenes. Certification training will give you a practical knowledge and understanding, as well as real-world experience through case-scenario assignments!

2. You’re interested in gaining a network of event professionals that you can call upon when needed.

Getting professional training opens up a TON of doors for networking possibilities! When you get certified as an event coordinator, you’ll be exposed to a greater pool of vendors and venues. As a result, you can create professional relationships with these people. This is so important as an event coordinator! After all, you don’t just want to form a great relationship with your client; you also need to gain the respect and trust from your vendors as well.

3. You want to perfect your problem-solving skills.

An event coordinator will often need to have the best possible problem-solving skills. This is due to the fact that coordinators are generally the main points of contact on the actual day of the event. This can be stressful, as you do not have as much time to solve problems as you would if you were planning an event a few months out.

Being an event coordinators means you need to be able to think on your feet. Keeping the client and guests happy, while tackling any problem that comes your way, is part of your job description. Professional event coordinator training can help you prepare yourself for these situations – while remaining cool, calm, and collected!

4. You want to be able to display a professional certification on your resume.

The event industry is competitive! This is just one reason why it’s important to make yourself stand out from the crowd. If you were to put yourself in the shoes of a client, would YOU feel more comfortable knowing that your event coordinator has had professional training?

Of course you would! Not only does getting professional training help you gain knowledge and confidence in what you do; it also allows you to have a leg-up on the competition.

I love that you start off with the difference between an event planner and an event coordinator! If you don’t do events, no one may notice the difference. Great job!

We couldn’t agree more, Tamesha… very well said! While event planning training and event coordinator training have their similarities, they also have their differences, too. A planner who wishes to have the most well-rounded skill-set possible would be doing their career a favor by at least CONSIDERING the explorations of both avenues! 🙂 Thanks so much for reading and commenting. You’re a gem! xx

    All the best,
