Please tell us a little about yourself!

I was born, raised, and currently reside in Saskatchewan, Canada with my husband and family. I am a country girl at heart and enjoy a variety of hobbies, including live theater and hunting.

When did you know that you wanted to become an event planner?

Surprisingly enough, I didn’t know I wanted to be an event planner until I became one. I had a lot of skills including time management, to-do listing, and being very detail-orientated that I thought would be a good fit with the event planning industry. So I decided to take some classes and schooling, and once I graduated from QC Event School and became a certified wedding planner, I opened my business. After doing a handful of events my first year, I really fell in love with the industry. From then on, my event planning business took off.

Why did you decide to take the wedding planning course with QC Event School? Now that you’re a tutor, can you give us a sneak peek into your tutoring style?

After 10 successful years in business, I thought it would be great to assist aspiring event and wedding planners in their education. Having learned a lot about the event industry in general as well as the business aspects, I can provide unique advice to those getting started in their event planning careers.

As far as my tutoring style, I treat each student individually! There is no one-size-fits-all approach to event and wedding planning. The industry markets and their corresponding opportunities vary a lot depending on where you live. I also believe that anyone can be taught as long as they have the passion to succeed!

Since you work with a large team, can you tell us when you knew that it was the right time to expand your business?

For me, I hired my first employee when I had too much work to do on my own—and it was the best decision I ever made! Even of you’re balancing a day job with your event planning business, it’s important to schedule enough time to your business in its growing stages. Hiring a casual wedding planning assistant helped me grow into new markets. And it allowed me to give my clients the time they deserved.

What are you most rewarding moments & career highlights?

I have so many! Honestly, every event I have done has been rewarding. Every time I finish a wedding and the couple leaves a five star review, I get butterflies. Some of my most memorable weddings consisted of some really great themes, including 007 and Marvel!

Hindsight is 20-20. Can you share one piece of career advice to students starting their event planning careers?

Your event planning business should have professional marketing and presentation materials before opening your doors! Home-printed business cards and brochures do not look professional no matter how good the printer. Emails from Gmail or Hotmail accounts scream unprofessional, and clients do notice!
